Jan. 23, 2016 – A night in which all 15 players on the roster recorded a point, the North Central College women's basketball team used that balanced attack to cruise past Elmhurst College, 100-75 while snapping a two-game skid.
In arguably their most complete game of the season, the Cardinals led almost the whole contest including a double-digit lead entire second half, while the defense kept the Bluejays on their heels all evening, forcing 33 turnovers.
Holding a five-point lead after the opening quarter, North Central opened its lead to double-digits after a 11-2 run early in the second gave the hosts a 30-19 lead. The Cardinal run was jump started by a three-pointer from
Siarra O'Neil, while
Paula Zerante drove the lane and scored to cap the rally.
North Central opened up a 16-point lead late in the quarter, its largest lead of the half, on a
Lauren Hernandez lay-up, while the Cardinals outscored the Bluejays, 33-24 in the second to take a 52-38 lead into the intermission.
The second half was all North Central as a three-pointer from
Caroline Heimerdinger gave the Cardinals a 66-44 lead with 4:59 to play in the third, and North Central held a 20-plus point lead the remainder of the contest. The Cardinals led by as many as 31 down the stretch, as Elmhurst could not keep up with the pace of play.
Three Cardinals finished in double-figures, led by
Kimberly Wilson's 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arch. Grizaffi finished with 12 on 4-of-8 shooting from deep, while
Anita Sterling added 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench.
Mayson Whipple turned in a game-high nine assists, while
Jamie Cuny tied for the team lead with nine rebounds and added a game-high four blocks.
Elmhurst's Kaela Jones led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field, while Mikaela Eppard added a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
