BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (Oct. 8, 2016) – Avenging yesterday's loss, the North Central College women's volleyball team closed out play at the Barker Chevrolet Classic hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University with a pair of wins on Saturday, cruising past Fontbonne University, 3-0 before fighting out a 3-1 win over Plymouth State University.
North Central (13-7) dominated on the offensive attack in the opening match against Fontbonne (6-12), finishing with 41 kills to the Griffins 19. The Cardinals made quick work of Fontbonne over the first two sets, winning each by scores of 25-16 and 25-17, respectively, before clinching the win with a 25-21 win in set three.
Julie Laugel led the Cardinal attack with 11 kills, while
Sarah Geosling also finished in double figures with 10.
Ashley Powers dished out a match-high 16 assists, while
Val Hunt added 12. North Central held a seven to one advantage in service aces, as Powers and
Rachel Elshoff each recorded a pair, while
Olivia Hanley led all players with 24 digs.
North Central fought out a tough four-set match against Plymouth State (12-9), as the Cardinals pulled out a 26-24 win in the opening set. After dropping the second set 25-14, North Central responded nicely with a 25-23 win in the third, before clinching the match with a hard fought 30-28 win in the fourth set.
Laugel yet again led the Cardinal attack with 15 of the team's 53 total kills, while
Cara Howell finished with 13 kills. Powers led the way with 22 assists, while Hunt finished right behind with 21.
Five Cardinals finished with double-digit digs on defense, led by 15 each from Hanley and Hunt. Howell finished with 12, while Laugel and Elshoff each added 11 and 10, respectively. Geosling led the way with five total blocks, earning All-Tournament Team honors for her play over the course of the weekend.
North Central continues College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Tuesday, Oct. 11, traveling to Augustana College with a 7 p.m. scheduled start.
