WINNECONE, Wis. (Nov. 12, 2016) - The North Central College women's cross country team turned in a ninth-place finish in a 38-team field in Saturday's NCAA Division III Midwest Region Championships, contested at Lake Breeze Golf Club.
The Cardinals finished the meet with a total of 306 points. Fourth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis won the meet with a score of 66, followed by the seventh-ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (81), the 13th-ranked University of Chicago (124), the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (125) and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (169).
Chicago's Khia Kurtenbach won the individual championship, touring the 6,000-meter (3.7-mile) course in 21 minutes, 41.22 seconds to finish just ahead of Washington's Aly Wayne. The Cardinals were led by Amanda Cortese, who placed 37th out of 264 finishers with a season-best time of 22:50.08.
Tori Capozziello followed close behind in 40th with a time of 22:54.68 which outdid her previous best time of the year by nearly 40 seconds. Helen Majer placed 47th in 23:02.14, and North Central's scoring was closed out by an 82nd-place finish by Rebecca Kaefring (23:36.00) and a 100th-place showing by Yazmin Nunez (23:59.28), both of whom recorded season-best times. Allison Hartman placed 110th (24:04.98) for the Cardinals, while Hailey Dammeier finished 144th in 24:42.52.
Qualifiers for the Division III National Championships will be announced Sunday at noon Central time on ncaa.com.
