CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 17, 2016) – The North Central College softball team began their season splitting an opening day doubleheader, losing 7-4 to Endicott College before taking game two 10-4 against Macalester College.

Senior Andrea Starr started the game strong, allowing only two hits through four innings, striking out two. In the bottom of the fourth, Starr would help herself out, driving home Samantha Anderson with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Rachele Belletini would drive home Starr as the Cardinals would take a 2-0 lead. Endicott would strike in the sixth, scoring five runs on four hits and one error.

In the seventh, Endicott would extend their lead, having two more runs come across on three hits. North Central (1-1) would put two more runs on the board thanks to a RBI single from Bri Floyd, followed by Amanda Walker three batters later, but the Cardinals would fall 7-4.

Belletini finished going 2-3 from the plate with an RBI while Starr finished 2-4 with an RBI. Starr (0-1) would take the loss in the first game allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

In game two, the Cardinals offense would explode as they put up a crooked number in each of the three innings they scored.

Macalester would take an early 1-0 lead in the first but that would be the only lead they would hold. The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead when Anderson and Walker received back-to-back walks before Starr homered to bring the pair home. Jenna Amazzalorso led off the second with a home run of her own followed by a two-RBI double by Walker four batters later. The Cardinals took a 6-1 lead into the third.

Macalester would show some fight as they answered with three runs of their own in the third, playing small ball in doing so. Three hits along with an error allowed the Scots to cut the deficit 6-4. North Central would put the game out of reach in the fourth, scoring four more runs thanks to three hits and an error. Pitcher Sarah Esposito would shut down the Scots the remainder of the way, allowing no runs and four hits in the final three innings.

Esposito (1-0) received the win, allowing two earned runs on ten hits while striking out one and walking two. North Central continues their spring trip tomorrow, facing Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in the first game of a double header before taking on Whitworth University. Game one scheduled to start at 8 am.
