Apr. 1, 2016 – Snapping a four-match win streak, the North Central College men's volleyball team could not muster any momentum, falling 3-0 at the hands of Greenville College in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League match inside Gregory Arena.
Â
The Cardinals (7-16, 4-8 MCVL) led throughout a majority of the first set, holding a 16-12 lead at the midway point, but the Panthers (12-11, 5-7 MCVL) rallied to knot the score 18-18 and force a Cardinal timeout.
Â
North Central responded to take a 22-20 lead after the timeout, as a
Jacob Zemba kill gave the hosts the two-point lead, but once again the Panthers clawed back, closing the set on a 5-1 run to win the opener 25-23.
Â
Greenville dominated the early part of set two, jumping out to a 15-8 lead while forcing the Cardinals to use both timeouts early on. North Central rallied behind kills from Zemba,
Andrew Bergstrand and
Bozhidar Kolev, while
Raymond Kraus added a block to pull to within two points of the lead 18-16, but two points proved to be as close as the Cardinals would come to the Panther lead down the stretch, eventually falling 25-22.
Â
Set three was all Greenville, as North Central held its only lead of the set early 4-3. The Panthers rallied to take a 12-8 lead midway through and led by as many as eight points down the stretch, going on to win the set 25-18.
Â
Zemba and Bergstrand each finished with nine kills to lead the Cardinal attack, while Kraus dished out a match-high 30 assists. Zemba tallied a team-leading 11 digs on defense, while Kraus added a pair of service aces.
Â
Nicolas Bilinski and Daniel Bilinski led the Panther offense with eight kills each, while Tanner Smith handed out 25 assists. Nicolas Bilinski also led the team with four service aces, while Andrew Johnson added a match-high 13 digs.
