Apr. 21, 2016 – Struggling to get any momentum offensively combined with poor defensive play, the North Central College softball team was shutout in their doubleheader against Wheaton College falling 7-0 and 8-0 on Thursday afternoon at Shanower Field.

In game one, North Central was only able to log two hits against Thunder starter Katie Thornton, with Andrea Starr and Taylor Clugston reaching. The Cardinals were able to keep the Thunder scoreless through three until a homerun by conference leader Christina Sandstedt gave Wheaton (23-9, 8-4) the 1-0 lead. The defense was able to keep the score close despite a two-run sixth by the Thunder on one hit and one error. Wheaton blew the game open in the seventh as a four-run inning on three hits and two errors allowed them to take game one 7-0.

Game two would prove to be much of the same for the Cardinals (15-12, 5-3) as they were able to again keep the Thunder scoreless through three but a four-run fourth on three hits and a Cardinal error gave Wheaton the 4-0 lead. A scoreless fifth and a three up, three down sixth for North Central brought Wheaton back to the plate. The Thunder were able to take advantage of three Cardinal errors in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs and run-ruling the Cardinals by an 8-0 score.

Starr and Clugston both recorded hits in game two while Jenna Trojniar, Sarah Esposito, and Brooke Kehoe also logged hits.

North Central committed as many errors as hits on the day, recording seven each.

Due to a scheduling conflict, the Cardinals home game on Sunday, Apr. 24th has been postponed and North Central will return to action Tuesday, Apr. 26th as they travel to North Park University with game one starting at 3 pm. Live stats can be found HERE.
