Box Score
LA CROSSE, Wis. (May 19, 2016) – The North Central College baseball team used a three-run first inning homerun from
Chris Hill and 8 2/3 strong innings from
Russell Hoh on the mound to stay alive in the 2016 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship, taking down Kalamazoo College, 4-2 on Thursday afternoon at Copeland Park.
Jeremy Quade got things going for North Central early in the top of the first, lining a leadoff single up the middle. Two batters later,
Bobby Smith singled to left, putting runners on first and second with no outs, when Hill quickly cleared the bases with a no doubt homerun over the left field fence, giving the Cardinals an early 3-0 lead.
Kalamazoo (24-20-1) trimmed the lead with a run in the bottom of the second off starter
Russell Hoh, but Hoh settled in nicely after that, allowing just two hits over his next 6 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals (31-11) added an insurance run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Dan Sotiros, scoring
Michael Mateja who led off the inning with a single to left.
The Hornets pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth, but
Nick Rogalski came on to retire the lone batter he faced to record his fourth save of the season. Hoh allowed two runs, just one earned, over his 8 2/3 innings, striking out eight while walking just one.
Sing Fong led the Cardinal offense with a 3-for-5 showing from the plate, while Quade finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. Hill led the way with three RBI on his fourth long ball of the season, while the top six positions in the Cardinal lineup recorded a hit, but the bottom three finished a combined 0-for-8 from the plate.
Kalamazoo catcher Brett Garwood recorded three of the Hornets six hits on the afternoon, while Josh Reuter recorded the lone RBI.
North Central will take on the loser of St. John's University (Minnesota) and host University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, tomorrow with an early 10 a.m. first pitch. The tournament website is available
