Sep 10., 2016 – The North Central College men's soccer team fought valiantly for the entirety of the game, but were defeated 1-0 by a formidable foe in the University of Saint Thomas, on Saturday afternoon at South Field.
The Cardinals got off to a promising start, with senior forward John Kissel and junior midfielder Ramon Marin both attempting shots within the first three minutes. Kissel's shot missed wide just to the right, while Marin's shot sailed just over the crossbar. The Cardinals did an effective job of putting pressure on the Tommies' defenders early.
Senior goalkeeper Sebastian Garcia also showed many positive signs early, blocking shots with 5:31, 7:17, and 9:14 on the clock. The Cardinals efforts were good enough to keep the game tied 0-0 heading into halftime.
Little time was wasted by the Cardinals in the second half, as senior midfielder Chandler Olah came close to scoring in the 51st minute, only to have his shot saved.
Much of the second half was played to a stalemate, until the 76th minute which saw junior forward Tyler Oliver of the Tommies score, thanks to an assist from junior defender Josh Boris.
Despite the setback, the Cardinals refused to lie down and never gave up. Sophomore forward Teddy Trifunovski, junior defender Nate Donovan and senior forward Ryan O'Deen each had shots that could have easily sent the game into overtime, and were unlucky not to find the back of the net.
The Cardinals look to get back on the winning track when they return home to Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium on Wednesday, September 14, when they host the Benedictine University Eagles at 7:00 P.M. Live in game statistics and video can be accessed by clicking here.
