Oct. 9, 2017 - North Central College defensive back Matt Sutherland has been named one of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Players of the Week for the week of Oct. 7. The CCIW announced this week's honorees on Monday.
Sutherland was selected as the CCIW's Special Teams Player of the Week following the Cardinals' 33-0 victory over North Park University on Saturday. Sutherland recorded two of a career-high six tackles in kickoff coverage and blocked a punt which resulted in a safety. North Central established a new single-game school record by allowing the Vikings to gain only 92 yards of total offense.
The Cardinals have received one of the CCIW's Player of the Week awards following each of their five games this season. Quarterback Broc Rutter and running back Austin Breunig received Offensive Player of the Week selections after victories over Washington University in St. Louis and Robert Morris University-Chicago, respectively, while linebacker Tommy Sora and safety Pat Cravens received Defensive Player of the Week accolades for their efforts in wins over Illinois Wesleyan University and Millikin University.
Ranked fourth nationally by D3football.com and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), the Cardinals (5-0, 3-0 CCIW) travel to Wheaton College for the Battle for the Little Brass Bell on Saturday, with kickoff at McCully Stadium set for 7:00 p.m.
