NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Mar. 18, 2017) – Despite battling valiantly all afternoon, the North Central College women's lacrosse team suffered defeat for the first time this season, as they fell 19-9 to the DePauw University Tigers, on Saturday afternoon at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in a non-conference matchup.
With the Tigers scoring first, freshman
Christina Truver continued her stellar play and struck first for North Central, bringing the score to 1-1 with 26:34 left in the half.
Following this, DePauw edged ahead through a 4-0 run that was halted by junior
Jordyn McFarlane, as she was the beneficiary of an assist from junior
Emily Zadny with 19:04 on the clock. Senior
Madison Maas, currently the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) leader in goals per game, would then collect the draw control, burst down the field and score, making the score line 5-3 in advantage of the Tigers.
From here, North Central struggled to contain the Tigers potent offense as they went on another 4-0 run, and taking a 9-3 lead. This was halted by freshman
Nelle Scranton with 5:22 remaining in the half, as she found herself on the receiving end of a Maas assist. With only 1:19 left on the clock, Zadny would weave between two defenders to score, making the score at the half 11-5, showing the Cardinals had much work to do in the second half in order to take the lead in the second half.
Coming out of halftime, DePauw would be first to score, but Zadny would set up Truver nicely with 21:24 remaining, and senior
Anicia Mattingly found Maas in scoring position with 19:00 on the clock. While the Cardinals had gained momentum after halftime, they still faced a five-goal deficit, being down 12-7.
Following four straight goals from DePauw that saw them extend their lead to 16-7, freshman
Jessica Deetjen showed that the Cardinals were not ready to concede the victory just yet, scoring an unassisted goal. Showing fight until the end, Zadny scored North Central's final goal of the game with 2:07 remaining in the game.
The draw control, which has been a major strength for the Cardinals thus far this season, saw DePauw take an 18-9 advantage and was without question the key to their victory.
Zadny, Maas and Truver led the way for North Central with two goals each, while Truver also led the team in ground balls with six, a career single-game high for her. Zadny had a game-high two assists, while Maas and Mattingly both contributed one apiece. Zadny and Maas led the team in draw controls, adding three each.
Defensively for the Cardinals, Mattingly and Truver both recorded four caused turnovers, while senior
Kat Schultz added four saves, while sophomore
Camille Seghesio added seven.
The Cardinals will shortly depart for California, where they will play their first game against Occidental College at on Mar. 21 at W.C. Patterson Field. Game time is 7:00 p.m. (PT).
