NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Mar. 4, 2017) – In a display of scintillating speed and precision, the North Central College women's lacrosse team obliterated the Beloit College Buccaneers 20-1 in their home opener, at Benedetti-Werhli Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
North Central had Beloit on their heels right from the outset, with freshman
Mynk Richardson-Clerk taking the initial draw control, resulting in junior
Emily Zadny scoring the opening goal of the game with 27:45 on the clock. Zadny would score again soon after, this time on the receiving end of an assist from Richardson-Clerk.
The remainder of the half saw the Cardinals continue to swamp the Buccaneers, and go into halftime with a 13-1 lead.
The second half was very much more of the same, with the Cardinals not letting up and allowing the Buccaneers to gain any momentum. In what was sure to please head coach
Danielle Fiala, several of the freshmen prospered in the second half and showed they are more than comfortable playing at the college level.
Freshman
Jessica Deetjen scored with 20:02 left in the half, while freshman
Madeline McHugh scored the first goal of her career with 19:04 left to play. With 17:05 remaining, freshman
Nelle Scranton assisted on a goal by senior
Kassie Whaling, while with 5:51 remaining, freshman
Rebecca Claussen scored the maiden goal of her career.
With just 1:02 left in the game, it was freshman
Christina Truver this time finding the back of the net for North Central.
While everyone on the team made valuable contributions, senior Maas led the way with three goals, while Zadny and junior
Kara Stevens also contributed three apiece. McFarlane also added two of her own. Assist leaders were Scranton, Whaling, Richardson-Clerk, Maas and McFarlane, all adding one, while McHugh had a team-high three ground balls, with Stevens and Mass also contributing two each.
With the ball in the Cardinals possession for much of the game given their dominance out of the center, there were still some defensive highlights for North Central. Stevens recorded three caused turnovers, while McHugh, Maas, Deetjen, Zadny, McFarlane, senior
Anicia Mattingly and Claussen all had one.
The Cardinals will look to extend their perfect start to the season when they make the short trip l to Lisle, Illinois, for a non-conference matchup against Benedictine University, at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex. Game time is 7:00 P.M.
