Box Score
Naperville, Ill. (April. 22, 2017) –  While several players, led by freshman
Christina Truver, turned in strong individual performances against the Illinois Wesleyan University Titans on Saturday afternoon, they were not enough to get the North Central College women's lacrosse team over the line, as they fell 14-7, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in a College Conference of Illinois (CCIW) contest.
Forced to play from behind after conceding a 3-0 run to the Titans to begin the game, junior
Emily Zadny was the first Cardinal to score, as she found herself on the receiving end of an assist from senior
Kassie Whaling, with 21:07 on the clock. North Central narrowed the gap even further shortly after, with 20:20 left to play, as senior
Jordyn McFarlane found the back of the net.
The Titans responded with another goal, but freshman
Nelle Scranton continued to look dangerous, scoring to shorten the deficit to one.
Illinois Wesleyan then proceeded to go on a 4-0 run, but McFarlane's second goal of the game with only 00:35 remaining in the half broke their hot streak as her patented spin-move proved too difficult for the Titan defenders to handle. Her goal saw North Central go into halftime trailing 8-4, with the game very much still up for grabs.
To open the second half, senior
Madison Maas found Whaling in scoring position with 22:36 on the clock, making it just a three-point game with ample time remaining.
The Titans showed their class, bouncing back in the form of two goals. With 17:26 on the clock, Whaling would score again, and with a score line of 10-6 the game was far from over for North Central.
Following another goal from Illinois Wesleyan, senior Maas was the beneficiary of an assist from senior
Anicia Mattingly with 9:33 left to play, offering the Cardinals a glimmer of hope that the game was still within reach.
Unfortunately for North Central, the Titans ended the game on a 3-0 run.
Whaling and McFarlane led the Cardinals with two goals apiece, while Whaling, Mattingly and Maas each recorded one assist. Mattingly and freshman
Rebecca Claussen each had five ground balls, while Truver led the team in draw controls with three, and caused turnovers with five. Claussen also added four caused turnovers.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Camille Seghesio finished the game with seven saves.
North Central will look to get back to their winning ways when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa, for a CCIW matchup with the University of Dubuque. Game time is 7:00 p.m. and live stats and video can be found
