ELMHURST, Ill. (Apr. 27, 2017) – Closing out their final College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) away series against Elmhurst College, the North Central College softball team split their doubleheader by scores of a 10-0 victory and a 4-0 loss Thursday afternoon at Salt Creek Park.
Like they have done for the majority of the season, the Cardinals got on the board first, scoring twice in the first inning.
Brooke Kehoe broke open the scoring with an RBI-double to right field, bringing
Anna Seffernick around to score. A batter later,
Samantha Phelps singled through the right side to score Kehoe.
It would take until the fourth for any more runs to be added as the Cardinals used three hits and two Blue Jay errors to bring across four runs.
Rachele Belletini singled up the middle to bring one run in,
Taylor Clugston reached on an error to score another and Kehoe took the first pitch she saw to single through the left side, scoring another two. The Cardinals would tack on another in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead.
In the sixth, North Central would use three RBI singles from Kehoe, Phelps and
Jenna Trojniar to take the 10-0 decisive win.
Kehoe paced the Cardinals twelve hits going 3-for-4 from the plate with four RBI on the day. Seffernick, Phelps and Trojniar each tallied two hits in game one.
Jennifer Yager (6-7) threw an impressive two-hit shutout for the Cardinals, walking just one while striking out four.
The bats would go cold for the Cardinals in game two, recording just four hits to the Blue Jays ten as the two teams traded zeros up until the sixth inning. Sydney Ruosi would break the tie with a three-run homer to right center. Later in the inning, Erin Steik singled to right field and held on for the 4-0 victory.
Stefania Passarelli received the win for the Blue Jays (16-18, 6-8) while
Jessica Weaver would move to 9-7 on the season despite tallying six strikeouts in the game. The Cardinals (19-17, 8-6) committed zero errors on the day while Elmhurst ended the day with six.
With just one series left to play, the Cardinals control their own destiny as just one win will secure their spot in the CCIW tournament. North Central hosts Augustana College on Saturday, April 29 with game one starting at 1 pm. Senior day festivities will begin shortly before.
