Naperville, Ill. (April. 29, 2017) – Despite leading for much of the game and a career-high six goals from senior Kassie Whaling, the North Central College women's lacrosse team fell 13-12 to Carthage College on Saturday afternoon, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

The contest began as a back-and-forth battle, with the Cardinals striking first with 26:26 on the clock, in the form of a goal from Whaling. The Lady Reds responded with their opening goal, followed by back-to-back goals from North Central, as senior Madison Maas scored with 20:53 remaining courtesy of an assist from freshman Jessica Deetjen, then freshman Christina Truver scored with 18:48 remaining in the half.

While Carthage were the next to score, another pair of goals from Whaling and Truver gave the Cardinals the lead 5-2, with 13:06 left in the half.

The Lady Reds would then reel of consecutive goals, but the Cardinals ended the half by going on a 5-0 run, with goals from junior Emily Zadny, Whaling (twice), Maas and Deetjen. North Central went into the half with all the momentum and a 10-4 advantage.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the momentum swung in the second half, as Carthage went on a 3-0 run to begin the half, bringing the score to 10-7 with 19:00 remaining. Whaling was determined to not let the game slip away, as she found the back of the net twice, with 14:32 remaining and again with 13:14 left to play.

With North Central holding the lead 12-7 at that point, Carthage found a second wind and went on a 5-0 run to close the game out, securing themselves a 13-12 victory.

Whaling's six goals led the Cardinals, while she also added an assist, along with Maas, Zadny, junior Jordyn McFarlane, Truver and Deetjen. Senior Anicia Mattingly added six ground balls, and Truver was influential out of the center, collecting five draw controls.

Defensively, Mattingly finished four caused turnovers, and senior goal keeper Kat Schultz recorded 11 saves.

Despite the result, the Cardinals still qualified for the CCIW Tournament as the four-seed, and will open tournament play on May 3, when they travel to Rock Island, Illinois, to take on top-seeded Augustana College.
