DECATUR, Ill. (May 6, 2017) – Facing the regular season champions for the second time in as many days, the North Central College softball team fell to Millikin University 7-3 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Millikin would strike first in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead but that lead would not last long as North Central took a 3-1 advantage in the bottom half. The Cardinals used three straight RBI-singles from
Jessica Weaver,
Taylor Clugston and
Anna Seffernick to take the two-run lead. That would be the only scoring the Cardinals could do as Millikin's defense shut down North Central the rest of the way.
The Big blue cut the deficit in half in the third and took a one run lead in the fourth. They then added two insurance runs in the seventh and held on for the 7-3 win.
The Cardinals were outhit 13-11 with both teams committing one error on the day. Seffernick,
Brooke Kehoe and
Samantha Phelps all finished with 2-for-4 performances at the plate. Kehoe would be the only extra base hit for the Cardinals with a double in the fourth.
Weaver would finish the year 9-8, allowing six earned runs on the day while walking one and striking out five.
North Central finishes the season 21-20 with a 9-7 CCIW record. With just two seniors graduating, the Cardinals look to rebuild and expect to be back in the conference tournament for consecutive years.
