AURORA, Ill. (Sept. 15, 2017) - What began as a slow start turned into a nail-biting second half as the North Central College women's soccer team kept its winning streak hot on Friday with an action-packed 4-3 victory over the Aurora University Spartans at Vago Field.
North Central's play at both ends of the field made it difficult for the Spartans to get on the board. The Cardinals outshot their opponent 10-7 in the first half and
Nykia Wetterman made two saves to prevent the Spartans from gaining moment.
Coming out of the locker room in the second half, the Cardinals got things started quickly with back-to-back goals from
Allyson Viederis off of a
Catherine Kent assist in the 48th minute and a second in quick succession from
Anna Brodjian off of an assist from Taylor Piggot one minute later.
Entering the 79th minute, Brodjian scored her second goal of the day off of a defensive steal to extend the Cardinals' lead 3-0.
But the Spartans were not going to give up. Kaitlin Im Hof responded with a goal off of an assist by Alicia Rotolo in the 81st minute to put Aurora on the board. But the Cardinals rallied with a goal from
Deja Simpson off of an assist from
Megan Jensen in the 85th minute.
Aurora would go on to score two more goals from Beth Robbins and Anessa Munoz with less than five minutes remaining in the half to bring the score within on and require the Cardinals to defend their lead. In the end, the Cardinals' full field defense outlasted the Spartans as North Central came away with its third straight victory.
Brodjian led all players with two goals and six shots. Viederis and Simpson each had one goal apiece and Kent, Piggott and Jensen each had an assist. Wetterman recorded two saves on six shots.
