Sept. 23, 2017 - The North Central College women's volleyball team ran into a University of Wisconsin-La Crosse squad firing on all cylinders Saturday morning in the CCIW/WIAC Crossover, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Eagles at the Residence Hall/Recreation Center.
The Cardinals (7-3) played UW-La Crosse evenly during the first few points of the match before the Eagles embarked on a 16-4 scoring surge which carried the visitors to a 25-14 first-set win. The Eagles broke open the second set in similar fashion with an 8-2 surge which turned a 6-6 stalemate into a 14-8 advantage, and La Crosse closed out the second frame victorious, 25-15.
Trailing, 8-5, early in the third set, North Central tallied five straight points, including a pair of service aces by Reagan Raymer, to move in front, 10-8. The Cardinals still owned a 21-19 advantage before La Crosse (9-4) ended three straight points on two blocks by Laine Hoeffel and a third by Jessica Jablonski. The Eagles closed out the match with two straight kills from outside hitter Marisa Johnson.
Cara Howell finished with a team-high seven kills for North Central,which also got six kills and a team-high 15 digs from Julie Laugel. Sarah Geosling recorded four blocks for the Cardinals. Johnson finished with a match-high 13 kills for La Crosse.
North Central returns to conference play on Friday, traveling to Wheaton College for a 7 p.m. match at King Arena.
