Oct. 13, 2018 – Closing out the regular season indoors at Five Star Tennis, the North Central College women's tennis team made quick work of NAIA foe Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday evening with a 9-0 shutout victory.
Opening the night with doubles play,
Diana Barcelata and
Morgan House teamed up to defeat Maddie Holdren and Abigail Baker, 8-1 at the No. 2 spot, while
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay cruised past Coco Ruggiero and Emma Bush with a 9-0 shutout at No. 1.
Katie McGraw and
Tiffany Smolik then completed the sweep with a decisive 8-2 victory over Ann Coddington and Cheyenne West at the No. 3 position.
North Central carried that momentum into singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets, as McGraw was the first to finish in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Coddington at the No. 4 spot, while Hougland clinched the match win for North Central with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win over Ruggiero at No. 1.
At No. 2, Kanthaphixay made easy work of Holdren, 6-1, 6-0, while
Katie Legorreta rolled over Baker in straight 6-0 sets at No. 5. Continuing the Cardinal dominance was House at No. 3, defeating Bush, 6-4, 6-1, while
Rena Kawakami scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 position over West to complete the Cardinal sweep.
North Central will take part in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships from Oct. 18-20, hosted by Augustana College at the Quad City Tennis Club.
