(Oct. 3, 2018) - Playing at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium for the first time in nearly two weeks, the North Central women's soccer team fell 2-0 at the hands of Illinois Wesleyan in a CCIW matchup Wednesday night.
Defense prevailed through the first 44 minutes and it seemed neither team would gain the upper hand before halftime. The Cardinals missed a golden opportunity in the 11th minute to take the lead after an offensive push left Wesleyan's defense outnumbered, but Kelli McCarthy's save kept the game scoreless. With under 30 seconds left in the half, Flower Edington headed a corner kick into the upper corner to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.
Wesleyan doubled their lead six minutes into the second half when Cameron Hindel's cross found Rachel White wide-open in the box, making for an easy goal. Although plenty of time remained, the Cardinals could not overcome the deficit.
"The last few games we have run into experienced teams that capitalize on opportunities. We knew what we would face against Wesleyan and they finished at key moments," said head coach
Andrew Gamarra after the game.
The Cardinals struggled to generate scoring chances, recording five shots all game, two of which were on net.
Madison Lockard tallied four saves for North Central.
"Our group continues to learn and battle. They have done everything asked from the coaching staff. We have had some poor luck and that certainly plays a factor at times in our sport. We certainly can turn things around; we need to find the net and build some momentum. I look forward to our next challenge," added Gamarra.
North Central (4-7, 0-3 CCIW) travels to Waukesha, Wisconsin Saturday for a CCIW contest against the Carroll University Pioneers (2-5-4, 0-0-2 CCIW). Game time is set for 5 p.m. Live stats can be found
