Feb. 24, 2018 – The North Central College men's tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak with a pair of win at its home triangular on Saturday, shutting out Aurora University, 9-0 in the opener, before taking down Concordia University Ann Arbor, 8-1.
In the opening match against Aurora (1-2), North Central swept all three doubles positions in convincing fashion, as
Alex Kohlmeier and
Lucas Pindak defeated Jared Burrow and Patrick MacDonald, 8-2 at the No. 1 position. At No. 2,
Victor Krueger and
Adam Winters made quick work of Joe Mascha and Colin Ritchie, 8-1 while
Tyler Haizel and
Tyler Bussell shut out Freeman Rosencrans and Chris Carzoli, 8-0 at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play the Cardinals won all six positions in straight sets, as Bussell downed Ritchie in straight 6-0 sets at No. 4, before Haizel sealed the win with an identical 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 over Mascha. Winters then claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win over MacDonald at No. 2, while Krueger downed Burrow, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1.
North Central wrapped up the opener with a 7-5, 6-3 victory for
Jon Stroede over Rosencrans at No. 5 and a 6-0, 6-0 win for
Cristobal Arias-Staines over George Hill at the No. 6 position.
In the nightcap against Concordia-Ann Arbor (1-8), the Cardinals claimed two of the three doubles positions, starting with a win by default at the No. 3 position for
Grant Tuider and
Saim Malik, before Haizel and Bussell took care of Ryan Curtis and Joel Werner, 8-2 at No. 1.
North Central (4-5) earned another point with a default win at No. 6 for Stroede, while Pindak handed Jacob Baxter a 6-2, 6-1 defeat at No. 1 and Kohlmeier sealed th victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Curtis at the No. 2 spot.
Malik followed with a hard fought win at No. 5, battling back from a 6-4 first-set loss to take down John Clark, 6-4, 10-8. At No. 3, Tuider fought off Nicholas Munson, 6-3, 7-6, before
Grant Slovin escaped with a 7-5, 3-6, 11-9 nail biter victory at No. 5.
The Cardinals hit the court one final time before leaving for its annual Spring Break trip, hosting Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday, Mar. 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Naperville Tennis Club.
