FORT MEYERS, Fla. (March 15, 2018): The North Central College softball team opened their season strong with a 2-0 win over Nichols College, followed by a 6-4 comeback win over The College at Brockport in their first two games of the Gene Cusic Classic.
Sarah Esposito went the distance giving up three hits while walking four and striking out four.
Freshman center fielder Emily Miller hit two doubles while scoring a run and knocking Rachele Belletini in for the Cardinals to take an early lead at the top of the second.
In game two of the Gene Cusic Classic, North Central defeated Brockport 6-4, after falling behind early in the first innings.
Pitcher Jennifer Yager held strong, yielding two earned runs on seven hits to go along with two walks and two strikeouts.
Reagan Raymer scored on an error and Taylor Clugston provided an RBI single to cut the Brockport lead to 3-2. North Central tied the score at 4-4 on Jenna Trojniar's run-scoring triple in the sixth. Trojniar scored the go-ahead run on Belletini's squeeze bunt, and Miller drove in the final run of the day on a single.
Clugston, Raymer and Trojniar each contributed two hits for the Cardinals. Trojniar and Raymer each scored twice.
The Cardinals continue tournament play Friday, March 16, at 9 AM and 11 AM (ET) against Nazareth College and Southern Vermont College respectively. For live stats of the Nazareth game click HERE.
