Apr. 28, 2018 – The North Central College men's lacrosse season came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals struggled to come back from a mid-game offensive drought and suffered an 18-10 loss to their final College Conference of Illinois and Wisconin (CCIW) opponent and cross-border rival Carthage College (12-5, 4-2 CCIW).
Although Andy Szun and Matt Curran scored early for the Red Men, the Cardinals fired back with goals from
Danny Boyle,
Tommy Huizinga,
Jared Weaver, and
Nick Pardo to take the lead, 4-3. Carthage quickly knotted following a goal from Collin Poitras, but Weaver was able to weave his way through the defense to put the ball past Carthage goalkeeper Zerik Rodriguez to take back the lead.
The Cardinals fell off track slightly in the second period as the Red Men took an 8-5 lead going into halftime and continued to pull away to a 14-7 lead by the end of the third period despite goals from
Noah Parrill and Huizinga.
Huzinga started the scoring off in the fourth period in the Cardinals' last ditch effort to defeat Carthage, but the Red Men kept the ball away from North Central's offensive squad and scored with under a minute left to take the win and put North Central out of contention for the conference tournament.
Poitras led all scorers with six goals while Huzinga led North Central with four goals and Weaver had a team-high five points.
John Fitzgerald's four caused turnovers and four ground balls led the team in both defensive categories. North Central forced Carthage to make 12 turnovers to the Cardinals' ten, but the Red Men's domination at the faceoff and lengthy possessions proved too much.
The Cardinals concluded the season with a record of 6-10 overall, 2-4 in CCIW action and only graduating two seniors will return a strong core group in 2019, looking to continue to grow the program.
