WAUKESHA, Wis. (Apr. 28, 2018) - Fending off an aggressive-minded offense with a determined teamwide defensive effort, the North Central College women's lacrosse team closed a record-breaking regular season with a victory on Saturday, outlasting Carroll University, 11-8, at Schneider Stadium.
Though they never led by more than four goals, the Cardinals (15-2, 5-1 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) never trailed as they allowed just eight of Carroll's 33 shots to find the net. Goalkeeper
Camille Seghesio, who entered the game as the CCIW leader in save percentage, stopped a school-record 18 of the Pioneers' 26 shots on goal to give North Central a win over Carroll for the fourth straight year.
With the score tied at 2-2 midway through the first half, the Cardinals pulled in front on successive goals by
Nelle Scranton and
Mynk Richardson-Clerk. Carroll (13-3, 3-3 CCIW) followed with a goal from Ariannah Ritter, but a free-position goal from
Grace Steiner and an unassisted score by
Annabelle Steiner boosted North Central's lead to 6-3 before the Pioneers' Clara Jelacic scored the first half's final goal with 4:04 on the clock.
Leading, 8-6 with 15 minutes to play, the Cardinals held Carroll scoreless for 13 minutes, getting goals from Richardson-Clerk and
Christina Truver during that time, to give the visitors a 10-6 lead with less than two minutes to go.
North Central's offensive effort was a balanced one, as Scranton, Truver, Richardson-Clerk,
Annabelle Steiner and
Addie Records each scored two goals. Truver also finished with three assists, five draw controls and three caused turnovers.
The Cardinals will host Carthage College (12-5, 4-2 CCIW) on Wednesday in the CCIW Tournament semifinals at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. Play is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on
