BOX SCORE
NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Sept. 9, 2018) - Aided by another stellar defensive performance, the North Central women's soccer team disposed of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks 2-0.
Fans had barely found their seats at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium when the Cardinals struck first, just 1:53 into gameplay.
Lexi Dimovski fielded
Elizabeth Hodonicky's throw-in, centering the ball to
Lauren Wille who was able to shoot it past Warhawk goaltender Nina Yonan. The Cardinals carried that momentum throughout the rest of the half, outshooting the Warhawks 6-2.
Eighty-five minutes separated the game's goals, although there was plenty of action to fill the gap. The Warhawks jumpstarted their offense in the second half, generating six shots and playing with a sense of urgency that was absent from the early part of the game.
But it was North Central who claimed the game's other goal. The Cardinals crossed the ball into the box where defenders and attackers alike frantically kicked the ball around, until it landed at the feet of
Kacie Moran who was able to blast it into the corner. The goal gave North Central a 2-0 lead with under three minutes left—more than enough breathing room to finish the game.
"Whitewater has been a powerhouse in our region over the last few years. Last year, we lost a heartbreaker to them, but they were a very experienced team. Our team got up early today and fought the entire time. We had some really bright moments that were inches away from hitting the back of the net," said head coach
Andrew Gamarra.
Making her second start of the season,
Gretchen Frantz stopped all eight shots she faced to earn her second win and third career shutout. Sunday's win represents the third consecutive game the Cardinals have not surrendered a goal.
"Our goal continues to be conference ready and we are pleased that the team continues to improve," said Gamarra.
The Cardinals look to keep the ball rolling when they travel to Lisle Tuesday, Sept. 11 to take on the Benedictine Eagles, with game time set for 7 p.m. Fans can follow the live stats
