La Verne, Calif. (SEPT. 2) - Bearing little resemblance to the team that lost 6-1 just two days prior, the North Central College women's soccer team tallied their first win of the season, defeating the University of La Verne 1-0 Sunday evening.

"Tonight was a good test of our resiliency. Opening up against Pomona was no easy task, but playing an equally talented La Verne showed what our team is made of. We have another young group, but the talent is the best it's ever been at North Central," said head coach Andrew Gamarra.

In her first start of the season, Gretchen Frantz not only earned her first win, but her second career shutout as well. The junior goalkeeper fought off all six of La Verne's shots on goals.

Although the game remained scoreless well into the second half, North Central piled on scoring chances to begin the half. The Cardinals took three corner kicks in a 40 second span, but came up empty. After that it was only a matter of time before North Central found the back of the net.

Aly Crum did the trick for North Central, scoring an unassisted goal in the 66th minute to place her team in the driver's seat.

"There were certainly some individual players that stood out today. But this was a group effort and we hope this effort will continue to show," said Gamarra.

The Cardinals (1-1) return to Naperville for the home opener Wednesday against University of Dubuque. Game time is set for 7 P.M and a link to live stats can be found HERE.
