WAUKESHA, Wis. (Jan. 19, 2019) – Beginning the second half of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) schedule on a high note, the North Central College women's basketball team trudged through the snow to avenge an earlier season loss to Carroll University with a 77-64 trouncing inside Van Male Fieldhouse on Saturday.
In a contest in which they never trailed, three consecutive layups from
Mitrese Smith opened the scoring to give North Central (4-14, 2-7 CCIW) an early 6-0 advantage and the offense never looked back.
Holding a 28-22 lead with 6:39 to play in the second quarter, the Cardinals caught fire and closed the half on a 15-5 run, capped by back-to-back three-pointers from
Maya Walls and
Page Desenberg to take a 43-27 lead into the intermission.
North Central held a double-digit lead the remainder of the contest, at one point opening up as much as a 22-point lead down the stretch, snapping a seven-game losing streak in the process.
Shooting at nearly 46 percent from the field, the second-highest total this season, nine different Cardinals scored at least five points on the afternoon while also holding a significant 49-31 advantage on the glass, led by a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double from Walls.
Smith also tallied her first collegiate double-double, recording season-highs with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Lyndsay Brennan fell one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine boards, while
Alanna Newsome added nine points and
Haydn Braun chipped in eight.
Sierra Grubor finished with a game-high 17 points to lead the Pioneer offense, while Katie Rosetti also finished in double figures with 12 points.
