HUDDLESTON, Va. (Oct. 19, 2019) - Competing in the USA Triathlon East Region Qualifier, the North Central College women's triathlon team posted four top-ten finishers in a field of 44 collegiate division III competitors. As a team, the Cardinals took first-place with 11 points in a field of seven NCAA Division III teams.
The course consisted of a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike race and finished with a 5-kilometer run.
Madelyn Scopp took home first place honors in the Sprint Collegiate D3 pool as she crossed the finish line with a total time of one hour, five minutes, 59.8 seconds. She came in from the swimming portion in 14th place but dominated the bike and run sections as she posted the second fastest bike time (32:22) in the field. Following a 39-second transition, Scopp recorded the fastest time over the 5-kilometer run (19:12) to finish the race in first place. She finished a full minute and forty seconds in front of the second-place finisher Amira Faulkner of Trine University (1:07.20.3).
Closely behind Scopp was junior
Annika Cotner, who earned fourth place in the race by posting a total time of one hour, eight minutes, 1.7 seconds. Cotner posted top-ten times in all three events, including the fourth fastest bike time of 32 minutes, 59 seconds. Rounding out the North Central squad was
Grace Miller (1:11:19.3) who took seventh place,
Molly Olk (1:13:14.1) in tenth place, and
Cora Isaacson (1:13:21.9) who earned 11th place in the division.
Behind North Central in the Division III team standings was Millikin University with 25 points, Milwaukee School of Engineering with 32 points, and Trine University with 39.Â
The Cardinals' move onto the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship in Temple, Arizona on Nov. 16th. The event is set to begin at 11:30 am (MST).
