Strong Offense Leads Cardinals to Victory

Naperville, Ill. (Oct. 6, 2019) - Following an even first half, the Cardinals' offense exploded in the second half as goals by Andreas Raaen and Jack Fairwood pushed the North Central College Cardinals past the Benedictine University Eagles, 2-0 to win their fourth game in a row.

North Central came out of the gates attacking on offense, but the Eagles defense and goalkeeper Martin Jimenez-Estrada held the Cardinals scoreless through 45 minutes. The Cardinals best opportunity came in the 17th minute when Elmer Eng bodied a deflected ball, but it ended up finding the crossbar. As a team, North Central took eight shots in the first half, but only one coming on goal.

In the second half, North Central kept their foot on the pedal in hopes of finding the back of the net. In the 69th minute, the Cardinals broke thru as Raaen nets his second goal of the season to give the Cardinals the lead, 1-0. Eleven minutes late, Alexis Flores flicked the ball over his head, off of the crossbar which found Jack Fairwood who finished the goal to give North Central a comfortable, 2-0 lead. Their defense stood strong as North Central improved to 7-3-1 on the season. 

Senior Marco Soto notched his fifth shutout of the season as he moves into a tie for fourth-place in program history for most shutouts in a season. He moves his record to 7-3-1 while Jimenez-Estrada falls to 4-2 on the year. Soto recorded two saves as the Eagles only recorded three total shots. North Central put five of their 15 total shots on goal. The Cardinals also held the edge in corner kicks, 7-2. 

North Central resumes College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Wednesday as they host Illinois Wesleyan University. The game is set to kick off at 7:30 pm.
