Setting the Scene:  The Cardinals enter the ring for one more round with the nation's largest prize at stake, taking on yet another previous postseason opponent in their quest to make history. 

Series History: This is the third football meeting between the two institutions. The Warhawks have won each of the first two, both of which occurred during the postseason. 

Whitewater won by a 59-28 count on its home field in the second round of the Division III Championship in 2007. In 2010, the teams met in Naperville in the quarterfinal round, and the Cardinals held a 10-7 advantage heading into the fourth quarter before the Warhawks closed the game with 13 unanswered points to pull ahead for a 20-10 victory.

National Rankings: North Central is ranked No. 5 in the most recent NCAA Division III National Top 25 Polls released by D3football.com and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). Whitewater was ranked No. 7 by D3football.com and No. 10 by the AFCA. 

Scouting the Warhawks: Whitewater won a hard-fought semifinal battle with Saint John's, 35-32, to advance to the Stagg Bowl for the first time since 2014. 

A game that saw the lead change hands five times came down to a game-winning 37-yard field goal by Warhawk kicker Wojciech Gasienica with 2:10 to play. Linebacker Matt Anderson ended the Johnnie's final drive with an interception. 

Whitewater has gained 215 of its 367 yards per game in the postseason on the ground and has owned a significant advantage in time of possession in each game. Junior running back Alex Peete leads a balanced ground game with 990 yards and 13 touchdowns. 

The Warhawks rank fourth nationally in rushing defense (56.0 yards allowed per game), fifth in turnovers gained (32) and second in fumbles recovered (16). Junior linebacker Kaleb Kaminski has made a team-high 97 tackles, while senior defensive end Jordan Brand has made 17 tackles for loss and 13.5 quarterback sacks.

This Week for the Cardinals: North Central advanced to its first national title game with relative ease on Saturday, opening the game with 35 unanswered points en route to a 45-14 victory at No. 4-ranked Muhlenberg. 

The bulk of the first-half damage was done by Broc Rutter and Andrew Kamienski, who connected for four passing touchdowns in the first 23 minutes of the contest. As the rainfall intensified in the second half, the Cardinals turned to the running game to put the contest away, finishing the day with 486 total yards of offense, 293 of which came on the ground. 

Rutter completed 16 of 25 passes for 193 yards and five TDs, also hitting Blake Williams for a 51-yard score in the second quarter. Ethan Greenfield gained 199 rushing yards on 21 carries and Terrence Hill picked up 74 and scored North Central's final touchdown of the afternoon. 

The Cardinal defense limited a second straight postseason opponent to less than 100 yards rushing and got a team-high seven tackles from Jake Beesley. Julian Bell and Dakota Cremeens each intercepted passes and Talha Ayhan recorded his team-leading seventh quarterback sack of the campaign. 

National Statistical Rankings: The Cardinals currently rank first among 247 Division III programs in first downs (366) while ranking second in total offense (559.6 yards per game), scoring offense (52.6 points per game) and third in passing efficiency (196.18) and red-zone offense (92.4%) and fifth in third-down conversion percentage (53.5%). 

Kamienski leads the nation in receiving yards (1,882) and receptions (124). Kamienski and Greenfield rank first (30)and second (29), respectively, nationwide in total touchdowns. Greenfield also leads the nation in all-purpose yards (2,409) and rushing yards (2,031) while ranking second in rushing touchdowns (26).  

Rutter sits second in passing efficiency (201.7), passing yards (4,328) and passing touchdowns (54) and third in completion percentage (71.3%).

North Central Team Records: The Cardinals have already established new single-season school records for points scored (736), total offensive yards (7,834), total touchdowns (102), passing yards (4,559), passing touchdowns (57) and rushing touchdowns (42).  

North Central's 59-52 second-round victory at Mount Union produced new single-game program records for total yards (699) and passing yards (522), and the 111 total points scored matches the highest total in a game involving a North Central team since 1968. 

North Central Career Rankings:  Rutter is the Cardinals' all-time leader in pass completions (998), passing attempts (1,476), passing yards (14,002) touchdown passes (138).  

Kamienski is the program's all-time leader in career receptions (253), receiving yards (3,620) and receiving touchdowns (45) while ranking fourth in points scored (270) and fifth in all-purpose yards (3,947), while Talha Ayhan ranks seventh in quarterback sacks (18.5) and 15th in tackles for loss (26.5), Jake Beesley sits 11th in pass breakups (19) and 12th in passes defended (26) and Ben Wong ranks 13th all-time in tackles (166). 

In just his second season of collegiate play, Greenfield ranks fourth all-time in rushing touchdowns (34), fifth in rushing yards (2,748) and sixth in all-purpose yards (3,353) and points scored (228).

'Red Zone' Returns in 2019: Once again, fans of North Central College football can get an insider's look at the Cardinals' football program, as 'The Red Zone' highlight show returns for its 12th season on Naperville Community Television, Channel 17. 

The show airs each Thursday at 8 p.m., Friday at 12:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 3:30, 7:00 and 9:30 p.m., Saturday at 12:30 and 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. It will feature interviews with coaches and players, highlights of the previous week's game, and a look ahead to the upcoming opponent.
