Dec. 4, 2019 – Held to just single digits in the first quarter, the North Central College women's basketball team was overmatched against 23
rd-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) opener, falling behind early and never recovering en route to a 94-49 defeat.
Maya Walls knocked down a jumper to open the scoring, but Illinois Wesleyan's Kendall Sosa responded with a three-pointer on the following possession and the Titans held the lead the remainder of the contest.
Trailing by just one, 9-8, the Cardinals went the next 6:18 of the opening quarter and the first 2:13 of the second quarter without scoring, while the Titans opened up a 27-8 lead in the process.
The Cardinals (3-4, 0-1 CCIW) shot 0-for-13 from the field over that stretch while the Titans continued to pour it on, closing the first half with a 52-22 advantage.
Illinois Wesleyan (6-2, 1-0 CCIW) led by 28-or-more the rest of the way, shooting over 50% from the field in the contest while getting contributions on the offensive end by 11 of their 12 players, including five in double figures led by 14 points from Katelyn Heller off the bench. Sydney Shanks added 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Sosa, Brooke Lansford and Catie Eck each tallied 11 points.
Walls and
Natalie Stavropoulos were the leading scorers for North Central with eight points apiece, while
Alanna Newsome and
Page Desenberg each added seven.
