LAKE BLUFF, Ill. (Feb. 9, 2019) – Propelled by a clean sweep of singles play, the North Central College men's tennis team rolled to its third straight win to open the 2019 season on Saturday, scoring a 8-1 victory over Lake Forest College inside the Racquet Club of Lake Bluff.
North Central (3-1) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, as
Tyler Bussell and
Marco Davila were the first to finish at the No. 3 position, scoring a 8-1 win over Carson Chen and Matthew Pawlowski. At No. 2,
Tyler Haizel and
Andy Hinch defeated Joe Bove and Aidan Burke, 8-4, before the Foresters (0-2) avoided the sweep with a 8-5 win at the No. 1 spot.
Hinch made quick work of Brant Christensen, 6-0, 6-3 to score the first win in singles play, before
Jon Stroede increased the Cardinal lead 4-1 with a 6-1, 6-0 trouncing of Chen at No. 6.
Sitting on match point,
Lucas Pindak wasted no time in downing Pawlowski, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 to clinch the match victory for North Central. Continuing the winning streak, Haizel was victorious over Bove by a 6-3, 6-0 score at N0. 3, while Howes took down Burke, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 2. With just No. 1 singles in play, Bussell claimed the first set over Matt Kacyn, 6-3, but suffered a tough 7-6 loss in the second set to force a tiebreaker. Regaining his composure, Bussell scored a 10-3 win in the tiebreaker to secure the singles sweep.
After a week break, North Central is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 16 with a pair of matches at Vaughan Tennis Center in Aurora, Illinois, as the Cardinals begin with Monmouth College at 12:30 p.m., followed by Aurora University at 3 p.m.
