FORT MYERS, Fla. (Mar. 17, 2018) – Completing its perfect run at the 2019 Gene Cusic Classic, the North Central College softball team added two more wins on the final day of its competition, first defeating the College at Brockport Golden Eagles, 7-5, before posting a 10-2 rout of the Knox College Prairie Fire.
After winning yesterday's games by a combined margin of victory of 15-0, North Central's game with Brockport (3-2) seemed to be moving in the same direction with the Cardinals leading 4-0 after two innings. North Central jumped to a first-inning lead for the fifth time this season, with solid base running allowing two runs to score off
Breanna Adams' sacrifice fly.
Emily Miller belted a double to bring in two more runs in the second inning extending the lead to 4-0. Â
But the Golden Eagles did not go down without a fight, crossing the plate five times in the third inning to take a 5-4 lead. Trailing for only the second time this season, North Central wasted no time in tying the game, with
Taylor Piggott scoring off an error in the bottom half of the inning.
The Cardinals reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning, when
Rachele Belletini came through with a two-run single to center field, scoring
Emily Miller and
Nykia Wetterman, who had knocked a leadoff double to ignite the team's offense. In the top of the seventh, Adams retired the side in order, denying Brockports' hope of a seven-inning rally.
Adams improved to 3-0 on the season with the win. Three-for-three at the plate, Miller recorded a game-high three hits while tallying two RBI, as did Belletini and Adams.
After a tight first game, North Central's red-hot bats put a quick end to Knox (2-8), tallying a season-high 13 hits on the way to a six-inning victory. The first inning saw Belletini connect for her second home run in as many days, scoring Miller who led off with a double. Miller rounded the bases again the following inning, scoring on an error to extend the Cardinals lead 3-0.
The Prairie Fire cut the lead to one in the fourth inning, scoring twice off four hits. With the bases loaded, Samantha Godomski forced a flyout to end the inning before Knox could tack on any more runs.
North Central's sixth inning put an exclamation point on their Florida trip, scoring seven times off five hits, while Knox's defense unraveled, committing two errors and allowing two baserunners on walks.
Godmoski earned her second win of the season, striking out five batters in six frames. Miller led the Cardinals with three hits, while Wetterman recorded three RBI.
North Central (8-0) returns home for their first game at Shanower Family Field on Mar. 22, with the Cardinals set to open play with Eureka College at 2 p.m.
