KENOSHA, Wis. (Apr. 20, 2019) –
Behind some stellar pitching and defense, the North Central College baseball team extended its College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) win streak to 11 while sweeping its third-straight opponent with a 3-1 win at Carthage College on Saturday.

Both teams plated a first-inning run as Jeremy Quade singled with one out, stole second and scored on a RBI-single to right center off the bat of John Carmody, while the Red Men (14-18, 4-13 CCIW) generated a two-out rally in the bottom half as Vince Schwartz scored Myles Farley with a double to left center.

Cardinal starter Jason Shanner settled in after that, working around a base runner in each of the next five innings without surrendering a run, while the offense took the lead in the top of the third as Quade walked to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a failed pick off attempt and took third on a wild pitch.  Carmody followed with his second RBI-single in as many at-bats, driving home Quade for what proved to be the game-winning run.

Continuing to set the tone for the Cardinal offense, Quade doubled to lead off the top of the fifth ahead of Rob Marinec who promptly drove home Quade with a double of his own, padding the lead 3-1.

Following Shanner's departure after six innings, Justin Rios retired all three batters in the seventh but a single and a walk put the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the eighth.  Tyler Jones came in to put out the fire and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, but buckled down to strike out Kyle Engstrom to strand all three runners and hold the 3-1 lead.

Following a lead off single to start the bottom of the ninth, Jones induced a foul pop-up and a pair of strikeouts to end the game, earning his second save of the series and fifth of the season.

Shanner improves to 4-0 on the season with the win, allowing just the one run on six hits over his six innings pitched, striking out nine.

Quade accounted for all three Cardinal runs and is now just one shy of tying Ken Ritter '88 for the program's career record, while going 2-for-3 from the plate with two walks.  Carmody finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Marinec also finished 2-for-4 with the other RBI.  In addition to his inning and two thirds pitched in relief, Rios also went 2-for-3 from the plate with a walk as the designated hitter.

Taking a break from the conference schedule, North Central plays host to the No. 1 team in the nation in Concordia University Chicago on Wednesday, Apr. 24 at 3 p.m. at Zimmerman Stadium.  Links to live in-game coverage are available HERE.
