CHICAGO, ILL. (May 1, 2019) - Looking to advance to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship, the North Central College women's lacrosse team ran into a tough University of Chicago team in the semifinal on Wednesday, with the Maroons coming out victorious 17-10.
The Cardinals started the game off strong, with
Madeline McHugh scoring twice to begin the game. Chicago (15-2, 6-1 CCIW) then went on a 3-0 run to take the lead before the Cardinals regained the lead with a goal by
Christina Truver and another one by McHugh. With the score sitting at 4-3 in favor of the Cardinals, Chicago went on a 3-0 run again to close out the half with the score in the Maroon's favor at 6-4.
A 6-3 run by Chicago to start the second half put them ahead 12-7 with a little over 12 minutes remaining regulation. Fighting to save their season, the Cardinals traded goals with the Maroons but were not able to go on the necessary run to bring the game close. Chicago ended the game with three straight goals to make the final 17-10 in their favor.
McHugh scored five goals in total to establish a new career high.
Annabelle Steiner added two goals while Truver,
Grace Steiner, and
Nelle Scranton added one a piece to round out the scoring for the Cardinals.
Camille Seghesio tied a single-game record for saves in a game for the Cardinals with 18, tying her own record from a game against Carroll last season. She received the loss in the contest to bring her final record to 12-4 and a save percentage of .465.
The Cardinals (14-4, 5-2 CCIW) now turn to the off-season after a successful season that saw them set single-season records in team caused turnovers and ground balls. Their 14 wins are second most in program history behind their 16 from last season.
