CHICAGO, Ill. (Sept. 16, 2019) – The North Central College women's tennis team improved to 6-1 on the season while garnering its fourth College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) win with a decisive 8-1 victory over North Park University on Monday at the NPU Tennis Courts.
The Cardinals (6-1, 4-1 CCIW) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, commanding doubles play from the start as
Ellie Gallagher and
Yaitova Spiegel opened the scoring with a 8-0 shutout of Sara Stan and Hannah Rosenbaum at the No. 3 position.
Next to finish was
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay at the No. 1 spot, cruising past Linn Viuhkonen and Patrycja Miazek, 8-1, before
Katie McGraw and
Linsy Jante made it a clean sweep with a 8-2 win over Lisa Viuhkonen and Kendra Belisle.
Heading into singles play, North Central was quick to capture the match win as Hougland rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Linn Viuhkonen at the No. 1 spot, while Kanthaphixay clinched the team victory with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Lisa Viuhkonen at No. 2.
Jante then turned in a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 4 over Stan, followed by a 6-3 straight-set win from McGraw at No. 3. The Vikings (3-4, 0-4 CCIW) avoided the shutout with a win at No. 5, before Gallagher closed out the scoring with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Carla Cuba at the No. 6 position.
North Central now takes a break from conference play, traveling to Kalamazoo College for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament from Sept. 19-21 at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
