Sept. 6, 2019 – Playing in front of the home crowd for the first time this season, the North Central College women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Coe College on the opening night of the North Central Invitational inside Gregory Arena.
After a forgettable opening set in which they never led, North Central came back with a vengeance in set two, opening the set on a 7-1 run to force an early Kohawk timeout.
Kaylee Allensworth tallied a pair of kills during the rally, while the Kohawks gifted the Cardinals five points with four attack errors and a ball handling error.
Still holding a six-point lead late 19-13, the set fell apart for the Cardinals as an 8-1 run for the Kohawks quickly turned the tables and erased the North Central lead.
North Central briefly regained the lead 23-22 on a kill from
Sarah Geosling, but Coe responded right back with a pair of kills to retake the lead 24-23. After the two teams traded points, Coe closed out the come-from-behind win with a service ace to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Shaking off the heartbreaking second set loss, the Cardinals once again came out of the gates hot in the third, jumping out to a 7-2 lead as
Lexi Barry recorded a pair of service aces, while Allensworth added another.
Later in the set, a kill from
Reagan Raymer and back-to-back Coe attack errors extended the North Central lead 20-12 and this time the Cardinals were able to finish out the set 25-17.
Unable to carry that momentum into the fourth set, the Kohawks caught fire offensively, recording 14 kills to just two errors to hit a match-high .387 in the set. The Cardinals meanwhile tallied only seven kills while committing five errors in the 25-11 loss.
Raymer was the lone Cardinal to finish with double-digit kills, leading the team with 11, while
Kiarah Horn led the team with 30 assists.
The Kohawks (3-3) held a 16-7 advantage in service aces on the evening, including four from each of Madi Parson and Morgan Kluesner. Kate Tidman led all players with 20 kills, while Kluesner and Parson each added 12. Parson also led the defense with 22 digs, while Majda Suljic finished with 17.
North Central (1-5) returns to the court on day two of the North Central Invite on Saturday, hosting Monmouth College at 10 a.m., before squaring off with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 4 p.m. Links to live in-game coverage are available
