HONOLULU (Jan. 27, 2020) - Broc Rutter represented North Central College on the national stage for the final time on the football field on Sunday, acquitting himself well among a group of the top players from all divisions of college football during the Hula Bowl All-Star game at Aloha Stadium.
The only NCAA Division III player on either team, Rutter made his first appearance for Team Aina, coached by former Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith, late in the first half and led the team down the field for its lone touchdown of the game. Rutter completed 3 of 4 passes on the drive, including a 28-yard touchdown strike to Idaho State University's Michael Dean. Team Kai, coached by former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan, won the game, 23-7.
The performance caps a senior season which saw Rutter earn the Gagliardi Trophy, the premier individual award in Division III football, and D3football.com National Offensive Player of the Year honors while leading the Cardinals to their first Division III national championship. Rutter was named a Division III First Team All-American by D3football.com and the Associated Press and a Second Team All-America pick by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), and was voted the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Art Keller Offensive Player of the Year for the third time.
Rutter established new Division III career records for passing yards (14,265) and most career games with at least 200 passing yards (44), and set new CCIW records for career completions (708), yards (9,772) and touchdown passes (107) in conference play. He finishes his collegiate career as the holder of 20 career, single-season and single-game North Central passing records.
First played in 1947 and being contested for the first time since 2008, the Hula Bowl hosted a North Central player for the second time on Sunday. Linebacker Lenny Radtke '06, a six-time Division III All-America honoree, participated in the 2006 game.
