STEVENS POINT, Wis (Feb. 18, 2020) - Competing in the final dual of their inaugural season, the No. 7 North Central College women's wrestling team overcame an early 15-point deficit to defeat No. 8 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 21-17 on Tuesday night.
Following a double forfeit at the 101-pound division,
Angelina Graff faced the third-ranked wrestler in the 109-pound weight class in Brooke Thurber as Thurber won via fall at the 45-second mark. Morgan Bethea won by forfeit at 116 pounds before No. 7 Abby Nelson took down
Abby Eisenbeis in 36 seconds to give the Pointers a 15-0 lead.
The Cardinals responded as
Asia Nguyen-Smith (130) needed just 43 seconds to record 10 points to earn her 11th tech fall victory of the season.
Amanda Martinez kept the momentum rolling by also winning via tech fall as she recorded a 12-2 win over Megan Struble in 2 minutes and 49 seconds.
The 143-pound weight class ended in a double forfeit as
Malea Palahniuk took the mat for the 155-pound contest. She earned the Cardinals third tech fall victory of the night as she secured a 10-0 win in 2 minutes and 15 seconds. Knowing the Cardinals would have a win via forfeit at the 191-pound division, the dual came down to the 170-pound match which featured two wrestlers ranked in the top-four of their division. No. 2
Yelena Makoyed would use all but two seconds of the match to win via a 13-2 tech fall over No. 4 Jessica Rottier (5:58) to secure the Cardinals' 21-17 victory.
North Central wraps up their season on March. 6-7 at the Cliff Keen National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships, hosted by Adrian College.
