ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 1, 2020) – In its first match of Spring Break, the North Central College men's tennis team came out on the wrong end of a 6-3 final, falling at the hands of Oglethorpe University on Sunday at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus.
The Cardinals (4-4) scored the first point of the match as
Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez and
Javier Suarez Balsera teamed up to defeat Zoe Raymond and Connor Sisson, 8-2 at the No. 2 position.
That lead was quickly erased however, as the Stormy Petrels rebounded to take the final two doubles spots and a 2-1 lead into singles play.
After Oglethorpe (2-1) increased its lead 3-1 with a win at the No. 5 spot, Suarez Balsera cut into the lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Walker Towns at the No. 2 position, before
Andy Hinch evened the match score 3-3 with a 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 comeback victory over Sisson at No. 4.
North Central would never overtake the lead however, as Oglethorpe clawed out three hard fought matches in the final three spots in singles play, as the Cardinals forced three sets in all but were unable to win any of the three tiebreakers.
North Central returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 2 with a pair of matches at Sanlando Park, opening with Concordia College (Minnesota) at 12 p.m. (ET), before taking on Houghton College (New York) in the nightcap at 6 p.m. (ET).
