ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 4, 2020) –
Closing out its annual Spring trip to Orlando, Florida, the North Central College women's tennis team scored a 8-1 win to begin the day over Emerson College, before suffering a 6-1 loss to NCAA Division I opponent Hampton University in the nightcap.

The Cardinals (12-3) took an early 3-0 advantage in the opener after sweeping all three doubles matches, as Hannah Hougland and Sydney Sawyer shutout Eliana Flores-Barber and Thea Nagle, 8-0 atop the lineup to start the scoring.

Following shortly after at No. 2, Linsy Jante and Ellie Gallagher made quick work of Annie Woodbury and Sophie Oglensky, 8-1, while Morgan House and Tiffany Smolik teamed up to defeat Cassia Burns and Sarah Skeeles, 8-3 at the No. 3 position.

In singles play, Yaitova Spiegel and Hougland each scored easy 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 and No. 1 positions, respectively, to quickly capture the match win.  Jante was next to finish at the No. 3 spot, scoring a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Oglensky, ahead of Gallagher who finished off Burns, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5.

At No. 2, Sawyer increased the lead 8-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win over Woodbury, while Emerson avoided the sweep in the final match at No. 3.

Playing by the division I rules in the nightcap against Hampton with doubles play only accounting for one team point, the Pirates scored wins at all three positions to take the early 1-0 lead.

Hampton (3-6) went on to win the first five singles matches in straight sets to clinch the match win, but Sawyer was able to end the match on a high note despite the team loss, fighting off Laura Peralta at the with a 7-5 first-set win.  After Peralta evened the score with a 6-2 second-set final, Sawyer shoot off the loss to battle Peralta to a 10-8 tiebreaker and earn the hard-fought victory at the No. 3 position.

North Central (12-3) returns to play on Saturday, Mar. 14 against Purdue University-Northwest, with matches scheduled for 2 p.m. at Park Forest Tennis & Health Club in Park Forest, Illinois.
