Cardinals Head into Nationals at No. 7

Mar. 4th, 2020 - The North Central College women's wrestling team enters the Cliff Keen National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships ranked No. 7 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) NCAA women tournament team rankings. A team-high four Cardinals came in ranked in the top-10 for their respective weight classes.

The ranking committee consists of six women's wrestling coaches, including North Central head coach Joe Norton and were released on Wednesday. 

Since the last rankings on Feb. 17th, the Cardinals took down the No. 10 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 21-17 in a tightly contested dual that came down to the final match of the contest as the Cardinals won their fourth dual of the season.

Yelena Makoyed sits at the No. 2 ranking in the 170-pound weight class as she beat No. 4 Jessica Rottier (UWSP) via a 13-2 tech fall. On the season, she has compiled a record of 23-2 and has won both the Adrian College Open and the Dr. Bob Kellogg Open. Amanda Martinez maintains her third-place ranking at 130-pounds. She is a combined 27-4 on the season, with a majority of her wins at the 130-pound division. The Riverside, Ill. native won both the Dr. Bob Kellogg Open and the North Central Invitational earlier this season.

Asia Nguyen-Smith jumped up two spots to No. 6 at the 123-pound division. She won by a 10-0 tech fall in just 43-seconds in the UWSP dual. Earlier this season, Nguyen-Smith won the Adrian College Open at the 130-pound weight class. Angelina Kirkpatrick makes her first appearance in the individual rankings as she comes in at No. 7 in the 191-pound division. She has competed at both 191-pounds in addition to 170-pounds and earned a win via forfeit against UWSP.

In the tournament team rankings, Simon Fraser (BC) sits atop the poll while McKendree University, King University (Tenn.), Colorado Mesa University, with Augsburg University and Tiffin University tied for fifth.

North Central wraps up their inaugural season at the Cliff Keen National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships, hosted by Adrian College (Mich.). The two-day tournament begins on Friday with live coverage available HERE.
