Offense Powers Cardinals Past Lake Forest 3-1

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (Oct. 15, 2021) - Finishing up their non-conference slate, the North Central College women's volleyball team took down Lake Forest College 3-1 behind an offense that hit 0.214 while holding the Foresters to 0.173.

Maddi Barickman opened the first set with back-to-back service aces before the Cardinals jumped out to a 9-0 lead. A kill from Amber Vande Hei pushed North Central's lead to 12, with the score at 16-4. Lake Forest would rally late, but it was all Cardinals in the first set, 25-18.

Isabelle Guererro sent home her sixth kill of the match to tie the second set at 4-4. With both teams battling back-and-forth, a kill from Abbi Barickman put North Central ahead 9-6. Emma Happ posted the Cardinals' third ace of the set to make the score 18-15. North Central led the rest of the way to take set two, 25-21.

After the Cardinals began the match with a 3-0 advantage, the Foresters would rebound to take a 13-8 lead. Vande Hei sparked a 6-1 run for North Central to knot the game at 14 apiece. Each team traded points until M. Barickman used a kill to give the Cardinals a 23-19 edge. Lake Forest finished out the third set on a 7-1 run to secure the win, 26-14.

Multiple attack errors from the Foresters and an ace from Trinity Evans put North Central up 5-1 to start the fourth set. Following Lake Forest taking a one point lead, the Cardinals scored ten of the next 12 points to make the score, 18-11. Despite Lake Forest's best efforts,  North Central closed the set on a 5-1 run, capped off by a Happ kill, to win the set 25-19, and the match, 3-1.

Guerrero posted a season-high 15 kills to pace the Cardinals with A. Barickman (12) and Kendra Battle (9) right behind her. M. Barickman dished out 33 assists and posted five service aces, each a season-best for her. Recording 24 digs, Emily Stallmann led North Central on defense while the team totaled three solo blocks and 10 block assists.

Mary Gegen tallied 18 kills for Lake Forest with Juli Barrientos sending out 30 assists. Barrientos also led the Foresters in digs with 16 on the night.
