KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Oct. 3, 2021) - The North Central College men's tennis team concluded their fall season by sending
Javier Suarez Balsera and
Ramon Vilarroig Martinez to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships. The duo bounced back after an opening-round loss to win the consolation doubles bracket while Suarez Balsera made it to the backdraw semifinals in singles play.
The Cardinal tandem fell to No. 5 Aduru/Shah of Case Western Reserve University to begin doubles play, 8-6. In the consolation bracket, they moved into the quarterfinals by taking down their University of Greenville opponent 8-3 and earning a bye in the round of 16. There, Suarez Balsera/Vilarroig Martinez beat Devito/Stockhausen of Wittenberg 8-4. In the semifinals, they cruised to an 8-1 win over the doubles team from Webster University. The North Central duo won the backdraw doubles tournament due to an injury forfeit from the Kenyon College team in the finals.
To open singles action, Vilarroig Martinez took down Andres Sanchez of Greenville to advance into the round of 32. There, he fell to the ninth-ranked player in the event, Arjun Asokumar (University of Chicago) in a tightly contested matchup, 6-0, 5-7, 8-10
Following a loss in the first round, Suarez Balsera began his run in the consolation bracket by beating Jamie Price (Otterbein University) 6-2, 6-0. After receiving a bye, he flew past his round of 16 opponent to move into the backdraw quarterfinals. He faced Samrvir Sran of Ohio Northern University and won 6-3, 6-1 to enter into the semifinals where his day would end following a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Arthur Hermange of Augustana University.
The Cardinals are idle until Jan. 29th when they take on the University of Chicago.
