PLAINFIELD, Ill. (Feb. 13, 2021) – Beginning the season on a high note, the North Central College men's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 sweep over Concordia University Wisconsin inside Five Star Tennis on Saturday.
The Cardinals (1-0) started the afternoon with a clean sweep of doubles play, as
Morgan Red and
Justin Howes got the scoring started with a decisive 8-1 win over Thomas Melius and Isaac Bruins at the No. 3 position.
Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez and
Andy Hinch teamed up to defeat Nolan Rademacher and Cole Werning, 8-4 at No. 1, before
Javier Suarez Balsera and
Ramon Vilarroig Martinez scored a 8-6 victory over Tim Peters and Joshua Klement at No. 2.
Carrying that momentum into singles play, North Central won five of the six positions in straight sets, as Vilarroig Martinez was no match for Werning at No. 3, winning 6-0, 6-1, ahead of Suarez Balsera who clinched the match win with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Peters at the No. 2 spot.
Hinch and Red each rolled to 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, while Gonzalez Fernandez had to come from behind but rebounded nicely with a 3-6, 6-1, 10-5 win over Rademacher at the No. 1 spot.
Steven Mears finished out the day downing Ethan Bilan, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 position to complete the match sweep.
North Central returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 20, taking on Hope College at 4 p.m. (ET) at DeWitt Tennis Center in Holland, Michigan.
