Seniors Lead Way Past Millikin

The North Central College women's basketball team began the day Saturday by pausing to recognize its seniors and ended it by seeing those same seniors lead the way to a 68-55 victory over Millikin University at Gregory Arena.

Haydn Braun, Page Desenberg and Rebekah Foley were honored during Senior Day ceremonies prior to the contest, and the trio combined for 44 points as the Cardinals (1-6) avenged a 74-62 setback on the Big Blue's home court on Thursday.

Braun, Desenberg and Foley scored all of the points in a 10-4 Cardinal run to start the game, but Millikin (5-3) countered with a 10-0 surge to move in front. The BIg Blue extended its lead to 24-16 with 7:14 left in the second quarter before the hosts put together a 9-0 run and regained the lead at 25-24 after IxChel Leeuwenburgh rebounded her own missed shot and fed Stephanie Kowalczyk for a jumper. Foley closed the half by beating the buzzer for a three-pointer, sending North Central into halftime with a 34-31 advantage.

The Cardinals extended their lead to as many as 10 points in the third period, though Millikin rallied to close the gap to 52-51 on Miranda Fox's three-pointer with 8:32 to play. Braun knocked down a pair of free throws, then fed Sadie Jurkovic for a layup to ignite a 13-2 run that put the game out of reach.

North Central made 23 of 31 free throws (74.2 percent) and 7 of 14 three-point shots (50.0 percent) in recording the win. Braun led all scorers with 20 points, making 9 of 10 free throws, while Foley established a new career high with 19 points and Leeuwenburgh grabbed 13 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench. The Big Blue wee led by Elyce Knudsen with 15 points and Jazmin Brown with 11.
