PLAINFIELD, Ill. (Feb. 27, 2021) – Having to battle back from a deficit after doubles play, the North Central College women's tennis team captured five of the six singles matches en route to a 6-3 victory over Lake Forest College on Saturday inside Five Star Tennis.
Lake Forest (0-1) opened the day with two straight doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3, but
Mikayla Edquiban and
Sydney Sawyer earned a huge 8-6 win over Margaret Bugnacki and Emma Wang at the No. 2 position to cut the lead in half.
Sawyer then quickly tied the match score with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Tyranny Miller at the No. 4 position, while Edquiban regrouped from a 3-6 first-set loss at the No. 3 spot to defeat Wang in comeback fashion 6-1, 6-3.
After claiming the opening set 6-2,
Nina Patience stumbled in the second set to Bugnacki but shook off the loss to take the match with a 7-5 third-set win.
Hannah Hougland then clinched the match victory for the Cardinals in similar fashion, grinding out a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 three-set victory over Julie Lord at the No. 1 spot.
Alaina Kanthaphixay also went to three sets vs. MJ Campos at the No. 2 position, earning a hard fought 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 win as North Central finished the match 4-1 in the five three-set singles matches.
Returning to action on Friday, Mar. 5, North Central travels to Park Forest Tennis & Health Club to take on NCAA Division I opponent Chicago State University with matches scheduled for 3 p.m.
