KENOSHA, Wis. (Mar. 30, 2021) - Splitting their fourth consecutive doubleheader, the North Central College softball team fell in game one, but used a four-run sixth inning in game two to take down Carthage, 7-2.

After a hitless top half from the Cardinals, Carthage threatened with back-to-back singles, but pitcher Breanna Adams forced a fielder's choice for the second out before Ellie Bernero fouled out to end the inning. Through four innings, both teams were held scoreless.

In the top of the fifth inning, Adams led off with a double and later advanced to third base on a passed ball. The Cardinals were unable to bring her home as the Firebirds used an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to score the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Mackenzie Miller scored Naomi Alonzo on an RBI single to give Carthage a 2-0 lead heading into the sixth.

North Central could not score the rest of the way as the Firebirds won game one, 2-0.

In the nightcap, the Cardinals struck early as Talia Torosian stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first. She singled and scored Emily Miller before Alyssa Texta walked to give North Central a 2-0 advantage in the first.

North Central extended their lead in the next inning as Alexa Sherlund began the second inning with a single and came around to score as Emily Miller recorded her third RBI of the season. In the fifth inning, Carthage used a Cardinal error and two hits to bring themselves within one, 3-2.

Dakota Novak hit a one-out single in the sixth inning looking to add insurance runs for North Central. After loading the bases, Jaime Smith singled to center scoring Kylie Ryza, who pinch ran for Novak. Miller then grounded out to the pitcher, allowing for Sherlund to score before Elena Stevenson singled up the middle to score both Smith and Katie Del Re to push the Cardinals lead to five.

Gianna Corban closed the door on the Firebirds the rest of the way to earn her third win of the season while allowing no earned runs with five strikeouts.

The Cardinals visit conference foe Wheaton College on Friday afternoon at Ruth Leedy Field. The first pitch is set for 2:00 PM and you can find links to live video and live stats HERE.
