Cardinals Sweep Firebirds, Set New CCIW Wins Record

Continuing to make history this season, the North Central College women's tennis shut out Carthage College, 9-0 on Friday, improving to 7-0 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play and setting a program record for conference wins in a single season.
 
North Central (10-5, 7-0 CCIW) was no match for the Firebirds (4-6, 3-5 CCIW) in doubles play, opening with a pair of 8-0 shutouts at each of the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.  At No. 2 it was Sydney Sawyer and Mikayla Edquiban over Sierra Sonnemaker and Faelen O'Shaughnessy at No. 2 ahead of the duo of Kaeli Smashey and Nina Patience over Stephanie Yerges and Kenna Beth at No. 3.
 
Wrapping up doubles play atop the lineup, Hannah Hougland and Alaina Kanthaphixay took care of Sam Ramsey and Rachel Anderson in a 8-4 final.
 
In singles play, the Cardinals scored straight 6-0 shutouts from Edquiban, Patience and Katie McGraw at positions No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, to quickly clinch the match win for North Central.
 
Continuing the winning streak for the Cardinals was Hougland at No. 2, scoring a tough 7-6 first-set win over Anderson before closing the match with a 6-3 victory.  At the No. 4 position, Sawyer was dominant in a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of O'Shaughnessy, before Smashey finished off the sweep atop the lineup with a hard fought 7-5, 6-4 final over Ramsey.
 
The Cardinals clinch the No. 1 spot in the CCIW Automatic Qualifier, with the winner of the AQ Tournament earning the title of conference champion and the bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.
 
First, North Central must close out the regular season, traveling to Carroll University on Saturday, Apr. 24 with matches scheduled for 12 p.m. at Jean Kilgour-Trailblazer Tennis Complex.
