WAUKESHA, Wis. (Apr. 24, 2021) – Finishing the regular season on a high note on Saturday at the Jean Kilgour-Trailblazer Tennis Complex, the North Central College men's tennis team shut out Carroll University, 9-0, improving to 6-1 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) play and setting a new program record for conference wins in a season.
North Central (10-5, 6-1 CCIW) came out on fire in doubles play,
Morgan Red and
Justin Howes teamed up to shut out Jordan Nowell and Chris Jensen, 8-0 at the No 3 position, just ahead of
Javier Suarez Balsera and
Ramon Vilarroig Martinez whole followed suit at the No. 2 spot with a shutout of Luke Barter and Ryan Strupp.
Atop the lineup,
Guillermo Gonzalez Fernandez and
Andy Hinch made it a clean sweep of doubles play while giving North Central the all-important 3-0 lead with a 8-5 defeat of Lucas Nay and Brian Trefliek.
Carroll had a player bow out after doubles play, giving Howes a win by default at No. 6 while quickly setting up match-point before singles play even began.
Gonzalez Fernandez wasted no time in clinching the match win at the No. 3 position in a quick 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of Barter, before Vilarroig Martinez flipped the scores to take down Trefliek, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.
At the No. 1 position, Suarez Balsera cruised to a 6-1 first-set win over Nay, before fighting out a tough 7-6 win in the second set.
Steven Mears got in on the action at the No. 5 spot, rolling in straight 6-0 sets over Jensen, before Hinch completed the shutout with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Strupp at No. 4.
The Cardinals currently sit in a tie atop the CCIW standings with Augustana College and will have to wait until the outcome of the Augustana vs. Wheaton College match on Apr. 29 which will decide the No. 1 and No. 2 seed in the upcoming CCIW Tournament.
