KENOSHA, Wis. (Apr. 30, 2021) – Rolling to the second-straight 5-0 victory at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Automatic Qualifier Tournament, the North Central College women's tennis team took down fourth-seeded Millikin University to advance to Saturday's finals for the first time in program history.
North Central (13-5) opened the day with a sweep of doubles play to take a huge 3-0 advantage into singles play, as
Hannah Hougland and
Alaina Kanthaphixay got the Cardinals on the board with a 8-3 defeat of Brianna Barconi and Cristina Borunda at the No. 1 position.
Following at No. 2 was
Mikayla Edquiban and
Sydney Sawyer, as the duo was no match for Destiny Galvan and Shelby Jones, ahead of
Kaeli Smashey and
Nina Patience teaming up to complete the sweep with a 8-4 victory over Nikol Obradovic and Katie Cooper at No. 3.
Needing just a pair of singles wins to clinch the match, all six singles positions scored first-set wins of 6-0 and 6-1, while Kanthaphixay was first to finish at No. 3 with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over Borunda. At No. 4, Edquiban clinched the win for North Central in straight 6-0 sets over Taylor Millholland, scoring the second CCIW AQ Tournament win for the Cardinals and sending the team to the finals for the first time.
North Central will face the winner of second-seeded Wheaton College and third-seeded Augustana College on Saturday, May 1 at 1 p.m. at Smeds Tennis Center on the campus of host Carthage College. The tournament webpage is available
